Powers Music School Announces Gavin Farrell as Executive Director
Powers Music School, located in Belmont, Massachusetts, has selected Gavin Farrell as Executive Director, following an executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG). He will begin his tenure in August 2017, succeeding current Executive Director Helen Clapp Stevenson, who announced her retirement last fall.
Dedicated to supporting music and arts within the community, Mr. Farrell brings 18 years of experience in teaching, financial management, program development, and operations to Powers Music School. He most recently spent two years as Executive Director of the Peabody Institute’s Preparatory Division in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Farrell previously held various roles within the organization, including Interim Executive Director of the Preparatory Division and Academic Services Administrator. He also served on the faculty, teaching music theory. During his tenure at the Peabody Institute, he helped develop Pathways to Peabody, a program that provides financial aid to talented and dedicated musicians. Additionally, he worked with the Peabody Community Chorus at the Henderson-Hopkins School and Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth, assisting in the creation of an online music theory course, Mastering the Fundamentals of Music. Mr. Farrell holds a bachelor of music in jazz studies from the University of North Florida and master of music in percussion and music theory pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory.
In making the announcement, Search Committee Chair Julie Holland Mortimer said, “Our search committee had the privilege of meeting a remarkably impressive group of candidates. We were very enthusiastic about Gavin and are thrilled to have him as the new Executive Director. We know that the entire Powers community will benefit enormously from his thoughtful, sincere, and positive leadership.”

Mr. Farrell said, “Powers has a thoughtful, creative faculty and staff and a deeply committed board of directors. I am excited to lead such a talented group of individuals as we work together to strengthen Powers’ ties to the community and build a strong future for the school.”
