Finance and operations
A formally trained conductor and pianist, Gary Holt joined ACG in 2017 with more than 30 years of experience in advising nonprofit organizations, performing arts management, board development, fundraising, artistic administration, operations, and program planning. Based in ACG’s San Diego office, he currently serves as Senior Vice President & General Counsel, Finance & Administration. Prior to joining the firm full-time, Mr. Holt performed several interim engagements on behalf of ACG, including Interim Chief Financial Officer at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Youth Education in the Arts in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Beginning his career with the international accounting firm Arthur Young & Company (now Ernst & Young), Mr. Holt has since maintained an active law practice advising nonprofit organizations in Southern California. In 1987 he was appointed Conductor of the San Diego Men’s Chorus and later became the founding Artistic Director of the Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego. In 2010, the two organizations completed a successful merger facilitated by ACG. During his combined 22 years with both organizations, Mr. Holt grew the Chorus to more than 140 singers, leading it to challenging musical heights with frequent sold-out concerts featuring a diverse repertoire of contemporary music, choral masterworks, and new commissions for male voices.
“Artistic vision can truly take flight when supported by sound fiscal and fiduciary practices.”
“Sound decision-making cannot happen in a fiscal reporting vacuum. Board members have a right—an obligation, even—to review frequent and detailed reports about their organization’s financial health.”
Mr. Holt has also served as Chief Financial Officer of The Old Globe Theatre, directing all legal and financial operations for this $18 million League of Resident Theatres organization and its more than 120 employees. As Chief Financial Officer at La Jolla Playhouse, he managed all finance, tax, and legal matters, including contract negotiation and review, co-production and royalty agreements, employee benefits, labor relations, and collective bargaining agreement compliance.
For several decades, Mr. Holt served on the national alumni board of Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he also studied and worked as a staff member for 11 summers. He was also a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Greater San Diego Business Association, and San Diego Performing Arts League. Mr. Holt currently serves as a member of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, which honored him as its 2012 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. A certified public accountant and attorney, Mr. Holt holds a bachelor of science in business administration (accounting) from University of Arizona and a Juris Doctor from University of San Diego School of Law.
