Artisan’s Asylum has selected Lars Hasselblad Torres as Executive Director, following an executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG). He began his tenure on August 8, 2018.
A lifelong artist, educator, entrepreneur, and public scholar, Mr. Torres has a passion for creating democratic social change through high caliber leadership, effective communication, and restless innovation. He most recently served as President and Founder of Local 64, a creativity sandbox that provides workspace, community, and creative support to Central Vermont’s independent and creative workforce. As Executive Director of The Generator in Burlington, Vermont, Mr. Torres led the organization through a five-fold fundraising and budget increase. He has also served as Director, Office of the Creative Economy for the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development, seeking ways to remove barriers to economic growth for independent creatives, startups, and companies.
Mr. Torres holds a Bachelor’s degree in international studies from the School for International Training. A mentor for the Mentor Capital Network, he also currently serves as a board member for the Vermont Board of Libraries, Vermont Journalism Trust, and AWAY, Inc.
In making the announcement, Board Chair Rachel O’Neil said, “The search committee was particularly impressed by Lars’s prior background and relevant leadership experience. We’re truly fortunate to have identified such a highly experienced and enthusiastic individual to achieve Artisan’s Asylum’s vision in the coming years. Lars brings a passion for arts and culture, a strong strategic perspective, and an infectious enthusiasm for the role he will be taking on with Artisan’s Asylum.”
“Artisan’s Asylum is a remarkable asset to Somerville’s creative economy and well beyond its geographic location,” said Mr. Hasselblad Torres. “I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to serve Artisans’ members, its board, and partners across the Greater Boston area to chart and execute the future of this arts organization’s growth.”
“Congratulations to Artisan’s Asylum on placing Lars Hasselblad Torres as its new Executive Director,” said ACG Vice President Wyona Lynch-McWhite. “He is exactly the kind of dynamic, visionary leader this makerspace sought to continue fostering innovation, creativity, and diversity and to work collaboratively with its members and the community. We wish them both all the best.”
