New York City Opera (NYCO) has selected Jason Smoller as Director of Development, following an executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG). He began his tenure on March 4, 2019.
A dedicated musician and fundraising expert, Mr. Smoller most recently served as the Associate Director of External Affairs for The New York Pops. In this role, he oversaw the development budget, external communication, advertisements, and event planning, including logistics for the organization’s annual gala fundraiser. Additionally, he identified and stewarded prospects and solicited mid-level and major gifts for the annual fund, special projects, and special events. As Development Associate at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, Mr. Smoller coordinated the organization’s individual giving campaign and managed renewals for high-level donors. He has also held roles as Development Assistant at the Dartmouth College Fund in New Hampshire and Development Associate at Northern Stage in Vermont, where he maintained donor databases and organized major fundraising events.
Mr. Smoller is an active oboist and English horn player, performing for orchestras such as Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and The Greenwich Village Orchestra (GVO). Since 2017 he has also served as GVO’s Executive Director. Mr. Smoller holds a bachelor of arts in music and French studies from Brown University and a master of music in orchestral performance from Manhattan School of Music.
In making the announcement, NYCO General Director Michael Capasso said, “Jason is smart, dynamic, and motivated. He brings a passion for the work we do, and opera in general, and has a strong strategic perspective. We are confident that, through fundraising, he will help lead NYCO into its next chapter of growth and excellence. He is, simply put, a perfect fit for us at this time of our resurgence."
“I am thrilled to join the New York City Opera team at this critical moment of growth,” said Mr. Smoller. “With the company's track record of successfully producing relevant and groundbreaking opera, I am confident that we will be able to build out a strong fundraising program to usher City Opera into the next chapter of its incredible story. I am delighted to be working with the dedicated board, staff, artists, and volunteers who make City Opera the incredible place that it is.”
“It was a wonderful experience working with New York City Opera to place Jason Smoller in this critical position within the organization,” said ACG Vice President Jenna Deja. “ACG extends its congratulations to Mr. Smoller on this achievement. His passion for music paired with his practical knowledge of fundraising will greatly help NYCO enhance its programming and find continued success at its new home, the Rose Theater.”
