Mosaic Theater Company (Mosaic) has selected Reginald L. Douglas as Artistic Director, following an executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG). He began his tenure on November 15, 2021.
A DC-based director, producer, and new play advocate, Douglas is dedicated to creating theater that connects audiences of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. He most recently served as the Associate Artistic Director at Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. While there, Douglas served as the creative line producer for the theater’s eight-show, four-stage subscription season, supervised year-round new play development activities, and assisted with various community engagement activities. He worked toward the successful achievement of eliminating a tiered artists compensation system, allowing all union artists to be paid equally, regardless of background. During COVID-19, Douglas continually engaged the community, producing a digital season and many other multi-media projects.
Douglas is a nationally recognized leader in new play development, having directed new and contemporary plays, musicals, and multimedia work by diverse emerging and established writers. As a producer, he has developed and produced more than 75 works of various types. Douglas currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the National New Play Network and on the faculty of Georgetown University. Additionally, he is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and was the recipient of the National Theatre Conference’s 2020 Emerging Professional Award. Douglas holds a bachelor of arts in theater and performances studies and English with a concentration in African American studies from Georgetown University.
In making the announcement, Board President Cathy Solomon said, “On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are delighted that Reginald L. Douglas has been chosen to lead Mosaic as its Artistic Director. His fervent love for the theater, combined with his undeniable talent and passion for conversation-sparking work and dedication to telling urgent and exciting stories, inject new energy to our space. We firmly believe that he is the right person at the right time for Mosaic. I can’t wait to see what he has in store.”
“I am deeply honored to be named the Artistic Director of Mosaic Theater Company,” said Douglas. “I am proud to call Washington, DC my home and deepen my commitment to this dynamic arts community by working with this great organization as we create our next chapters together. Building upon Mosaic’s foundation of community-centered, cross-cultural theater, I look forward to working with our board and staff to make Mosaic a company that celebrates the rich diversity of thought, creativity, and communities that call DC and the Washington metropolitan area home. Together, we will produce plays and programs—made for and with our community—that ignite thoughtful conversation, center artists and audiences of all background and neighborhoods, and value empathy, collaboration, and joy as vital to our success. I could not be more inspired and ready to begin this exciting work, using our theater to reflect the world not just as it is, but as it could be.”
“Congratulations to the board and staff of Mosaic Theater Company on their selection of Reginald L. Douglas as Artistic Director,” said ACG Vice President Jenna Deja. “As a creative and forward-thinking leader open to new ideas, we are confident that he will embrace the opportunity to define the role of Artistic Director in today’s rapidly evolving theater landscape. We are excited to see Mosaic and Douglas work together in this exciting new phase to shepherd both the artists and the theater into a new era while maintaining Mosaic’s core values.”
