Berkshire Choral International (BCI) has selected Steve Smith as President, following an executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG). He will begin his tenure in September 2019.
An enthusiastic and skilled arts administrator, entrepreneur, and community builder with a background in choral and orchestral production, Mr. Smith joins BCI after serving as the Executive Director of Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus for four years. In this role, he oversaw a $3.5 million budget, grew contributed and earned revenue, and coordinated the first board-approved strategic plan in seven years. He was also instrumental in the creation of a pilot middle school residency program. Mr. Smith has also held the Executive Director role at Revels in Massachusetts, where he was responsible for a $1.5 million budget, grew attendance, and increased individual giving. He also restructured the education program, doubling student participation in one year and serving 30 new schools. Prior to his role at Revels, Mr. Smith served as Executive Director of Boston Gay Men’s Chorus for 14 years, an achievement marked by a 260 percent increase in series attendance, 200 percent increase in overall fundraising, the 2008 Massachusetts Teachers Association Human Rights Award, and a PBS documentary. His additional leadership experience includes Concert Coordinator for the Northeastern University Department of Music, Operations Manager for the Xfinity Center (formerly the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts), Booking Associate for Karen McFarlane Artists, Inc., and Marketing Assistant for Pepsico Summerfare. Mr. Smith has also acted as a freelance consultant for several small and mid-sized arts organizations, including Musica Sacra and the Dance Complex, both located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Mr. Smith holds a bachelor of arts degree in music/arts management from Baldwin-Wallace University in Ohio. He has also completed the Executive Education Program from the Harvard University Kennedy School, a Strategic Leadership Seminar from National Arts Strategies, and an American Symphony Orchestra League Training Program. Emphasizing his leadership skills in the arts and culture sector, Mr. Smith has been on the board of directors for Arts Boston, Greater Boston Choral Consortium, and GALA Choruses.
