He has also held a role as a Jazz Curator & Marketing Director at Spivey Hall. In making the announcement, Board and Search Committee Chair Michele Levy said, “ACG guided us through a challenging talent market with wisdom and persistence. We looked far and wide to find an accomplished, creative leader who could help advance our ambitious goals—we were delighted to find Steve right here in Vermont! The search committee was impressed with his reputation as an arts and community leader, and with his clear passion for the Smirkus mission and we could not be more pleased with the outcome of our partnership with ACG. As we look towards our 35th summer, I am thrilled to welcome Steve to the Smirkus community!”

"This is a time of change for so many people, myself included. I was looking to put my skills and experience to work for a non-profit arts organization in Vermont that was outside of my usual proscenium-based comfort zone, but still very mission-driven with a history of doing good,” said MacQueen. “Connecting with Circus Smirkus and becoming the Executive Artistic Director still has a pinch-me quality…can this be real? The staff, the artists, the board, the community…it’s a perfect fit for this step in my career and I am excited beyond words to start doing my part to build on the incredible traditions that Circus Smirkus has established in the past 35 years, and help move them forward in new, exciting directions."

“Congratulations to the search committee, board, and staff of Circus Smirkus on the announcement of Steve MacQueen as the new Artistic Director,” said ACG Vice President Jenna Deja. “MacQueen is a transformative, creative, strategic, and inspirational arts leader with a sense of adventure and passion for circus. We are excited for the new ideas and opportunities that MacQueen will foster with Circus Smirkus.”
