Shea’s Performing Arts Center (Shea’s) has selected Kevin Sweeney as Director of Marketing and Communications, following an executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG). He began his tenure on September 16, 2019.
A skilled marketer and leader with more than 20 years of experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, Mr. Sweeney brings a knowledge of arts business and a passion for the arts community. Most recently, he served as the Director of Marketing for Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York. Over the past 10 years in this role, he oversaw the annual budget of $1.2 million, created and managed the annual marketing plan, and led the rebranding initiative for both stages. He also maximized revenue by focusing on single-ticket initiatives and reconfiguring venue pricing and sections. Prior to this role, Mr. Sweeney worked as an Account Executive for WarnerMedia (formerly Time Warner Media Cable). He also held the Senior Vice President role at Arena Marketing, LLC, where he created a national marketing plan, managed the sales staff, and developed a five-year strategic sales plan. His additional leadership roles include National Sales Director for Next Step Publishing and Senior Account Executive for Normal Communications.
An extraordinary leader, Mr. Sweeney also served 10 years in the United States Air Force as a Russian intelligence analyst for the National Security Agency. He remains an active member of the arts community producing, directing, and performing in both professional and local theater. Mr. Sweeney holds a bachelor of arts degree in humanities/marketing from Pennsylvania State University.
In making the announcement, Shea’s President Michael G. Murphy said, “We are excited to welcome Kevin to Shea’s. Kevin’s appointment caps a five-month nationwide process conducted by the Shea’s search committee with the assistance of Arts Consulting Group. We received dozens of applications from across North America and finding the ideal candidate in nearby Rochester makes this appointment to the Shea’s staff very special. Kevin’s knowledge of theater and arts marketing along with his enthusiasm for Shea’s and Buffalo will be of great benefit to the region.”
“I am grateful to Michael and the executive leadership at Shea’s for selecting me for this amazing opportunity,” said Mr. Sweeney. “Buffalo is an exciting city with a vibrant downtown and a wonderful arts community. The historic Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, along with the Shea’s 710 and Shea’s Smith Theatres, is unquestionably one of the finest performing arts centers in the country. To work with the talented team at Shea’s and presenting partner Albert Nocciolino to continue the growth of downtown and in the Theatre District is a dream come true.”
“Congratulations to Mr. Sweeney and Shea’s Performing Arts Center,” said ACG Vice President Cindy Grzanowski. “Mr. Sweeney possesses the arts marketing background, passion for the theater, and leadership skills necessary to launch Shea’s into its next era of brand visibility, community connection, and earned revenue growth.”
